Frequently Asked Questions
Different parts of the world contain different diseases. However, even if you have received vaccinations for common global illnesses, you may come into contact with strains that are unique to your destination. That is why we recommend getting re-vaccinated or taking prescribed prophylactics that can protect you while traveling. Most commonly, the CDC recommends getting immunized against the following:
- COVID
- Flu
- Respiratory syncytial virus
- Norovirus
- Measles-mumps-rubella
- Tetanus
- Yellow fever
- Malaria
- Dengue
- Zika
- Typhoid
If you receive a prescription to take with you during your travels, we cannot stress enough how important taking this medication is. Not only is preserving your health while abroad our top priority, but we are giving you this prescription to make sure you have a smooth, fun trip.
Outside of shielding your body against diseases, medication can help prevent inconveniences like traveler’s diarrhea. The food or water you consume during your time overseas may contain bacteria or other harmful chemicals. Coming into contact with contaminated food is not guaranteed. However, we still recommend taking this prescription so that you can avoid wasting precious time in the bathroom while you’re away.
Altitude sickness is another common condition that travelers face, especially if you live close to sea level like in the local area around our travel clinic in SoHo. With just a few pills, you can set off for your destination without needing to worry about headaches or nausea.
Because it is easier for you to be infected by diseases that are foreign to you, the CDC frequently recommends that you get tested for your destination’s common viruses and infections upon returning home. If your screenings find that you have contracted a foreign strain of a disease during your stay, you may be required to quarantine.
While not every insurance company out there covers pre-travel medicine, SoHo Health NY accepts some plans that do. This can range from traditional plans to some offered by the NYS Health Benefit Exchange (HIX). We recommend getting in contact with your provider before your trip so you can find out whether you will have to pay up front for your treatment. Even if you do not receive coverage, we offer financing plans that are flexible and affordable. This allows you to prepare for your time abroad without adding on another surprise expense to your list.
